FAQ

Who are you and why are you offering this experience?

I’m a Hastings mom and an arts and culture reporter/producer for NPR, the BBC, KCRW, and more. Physical distancing is in effect but it doesn’t mean we can’t have fun and learn great storytelling skills. Here’s more about me.

What is your teaching experience?

I taught at Yale for 14 years, including offering the College’s first-ever course on “Writing for Radio.” I’ve also guest lectured for the Stony Brook University Audio Podcast Fellowship Program and the Association of Independents in Radio.

When will this be offered?

Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30 PM. There will be eight weekly Zoom sessions starting on October 7th. Minimum enrollment is 10, maximum is 15. If the age range is very broad, I may offer a second section.

Can you describe the general outline?

We’ll start with an introduction to podcasting, then learn how to work with sound. Projects include: Audio postcards, vox pops, interviews, mini memoirs, sound portraits, and news/commentaries.

What materials are required?

Access to Zoom, headphones, an email account, an inexpensive audio recorder and SD card like this, or a phone recording app (with enough memory to record 30 minutes).  We will also work collaboratively on a privacy-protected cloud-based digital audio workstation called Soundtrap- there is no additional fee for registered students.

How can kids participate while maintaining physical distancing?

All of the sound we need can be gathered at home, or locally outside, while distancing and/or wearing masks.

How much does this cost?

Before 9/23, each registration is $500 with a 5% sibling discount. After 9/23, registration is $550 with no sibling discount. All registrations/payment must take place before 9/30, and no students may register without parental permission. Acceptable forms of payment are Venmo/PayPal/check. I will invoice upon receipt of registration.

What if I miss a session?

Class notes will always be posted in our shared workspace along with Zoom recordings of our sessions.

What if I have to cancel my registration?

If you cancel before the first session, your registration will be refunded in full. If you cancel in the first week, $50 will be deducted from your refund. No refunds will be given after the second week, except by my discretion under extraordinary circumstances such as prolonged illness.

Is this only open to kids in Hastings?

No! Because we meet on Zoom, anyone can sign up. In fact, if you refer two other participants who register I’ll knock 5% off your registration and theirs. Just remember that enrollment caps at 15 students so everyone gets a chance to shine.

Do you also offer private instruction?

Schedule permitting this may be possible- please contact me to discuss.

Are you planning to offer something like this for adults in the future?

Possibly- if there’s interest please let me know!
